JAKARTA - The first ever Air to Air Refuelling Subject Matter Expert Exchange (AAR SMEE) between the Indonesian Air Force (TNI AU) and the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) was conducted in Jakarta over 6 – 7 February 2018. This new initiative between our two Air Forces; first identified during the 2018 Air Force to Air Force talks, involved three RAAF personnel representing the fighter jet and tanker fraternity and six TNI AU F-16 pilots from 3 and 16 Squadron, based at Iswahyudi and Pekanbaru Air Bases, in East Java and Riau provinces, respectively. The event was hosted by Col Ferdinand Roring, Senior Staff Officer for Operations and Training from TNI AU Headquarters.
SQNLDR Anthony Slaven, an F-18 pilot and RAAF AAR SMEE team leader, was accompanied by FLTLT Benjamin Lyons, a KC-30A pilot and WOFF Colin Lubbock, a KC-30A boom operator, both from RAAF Base Amberley. Members provided briefings on AAR techniques and planning, KC-30A capabilities as well as sharing their experiences and challenges associated with this capability with their TNI AU colleagues.
All participants had the opportunity to forge closer bonds, as well as share in some of the gastronomical delights Jakarta has to offer while attending a dinner hosted by Air Force Attaché – Jakarta, GPCAPT Steve Cook on the first night, and again on the following evening during a dinner hosted by Col Roring.
Preliminary dialogue continue for follow up bilateral engagement opportunities between TNI AU and RAAF including a potential visit by a RAAF KC-30A tanker to Indonesia in the near future in order for TNI AU senior leadership and fighter pilots to get up close and personal with this amazing, yet complex capability.
The AAR SMEE was considered a success by all those involved and will only strengthen military relations, not only within the fighter and tanking communities but between both the Indonesian Air Force and RAAF.
