AUSTRALIA - During the period 05-10 August 2018, SESKOAD conducted their inaugural study tour to Australia.  The contingent consisted of 40 students along with a small cadre staff led by the Deputy Commander and Dean of the student body.   The contingent was one of six groups that toured countries throughout the Asian Pacific region. SESKOAD’s aim whilst in Australia was to enhance students’ cultural awareness, gain valuable insight into ADF military capabilities, training priorities and Defence industry. Most importantly, the visit offered the opportunity for SESKOAD students to meet their counterparts at the Australian Command and Staff College located in Canberra.     For the majority of the contingent, this tour represented the first opportunity to visit Australia.  Upon arrival in Sydney the contingent were hit with a swift winter breeze that would serve as a taste of the semi artic conditions in the nation’s capital during the winter months.   Donning multiple layers of clothing to shield against the elements, the contingent were escorted from Botany Bay to the Opera House where they were able to take a number of ‘selfies’ amongst iconic Sydney landmarks.    After enjoying the splendor of Sydney Harbour, the contingent embarked for Canberra, the nation’s capital where they received briefs at Army Headquarters and Australian Command and Staff College.  The contingent participated in the Last Post Ceremony at the Australian War Memorial where the Dean of the student body, along with the senior SESKOAD student, laid wreaths at the pool of remembrance alongside the Australian and New Zealand Deputy Chiefs of Army.  The day concluded with a dinner and an informative address by the Indonesian Ambassador to Australia at the Indonesian Embassy.   The Canberra leg concluded with a morning tour of Parliament House, with the contingent happy to be heading to warmer temperatures as they returned to Sydney for an evening Sydney Harbour cruise.  The tour gained momentum on the penultimate day with a visit to the Amphibious Task Group at HMAS Kuttabul and concluded with a tour and lunch on the Royal Australian Navy’s newest ship, HMAS Canberra.  Prior to departing Australian shores, SESKOAD was able to enjoy the sights of Bondi Beach before expending the remainder of their allowances at Paddy’s Market.     The study tour was a resounding success and thoroughly enjoyed by both the participants and those who hosted and supported the visit.  The tour stands as a highly positive reflection of the AUSINDO bilateral relationship and we hope to see SESKOAD in Australia again in 2019.
